Paul talks with a local small business owner
When people ask me what we can do to help boost Michigan’s economy, I have simple advice. When you have the opportunity, buy Michigan-made products first. Whether it’s buying fruit from a local grocer, banking at a local bank or credit union, or taking a vacation in Michigan, supporting Michigan businesses can lead Michigan into a brighter future. The State of Michigan’s approach to economic development needs to be the same, buy local, hire local, contract local—help support and create Michigan jobs. These simple steps can make Michigan competitive in the global marketplace. While it may seem that many things are beyond our control, supporting our own can go a long way in helping Michigan’s economy recover. I am committed to creating Michigan jobs by supporting Michigan businesses and will make job creation my #1 priority in Lansing. You can find out more about buying local at www. buymichfirst.com.
Paul Gieleghem’s plan for economic development includes:
HIRE MICHIGAN FIRST – We must fight for each and every job. When tax dollars are used to incentivize job creation, Michigan residents deserve the first opportunity to be hired.
CONTRACT LOCALLY – We miss the chance to create jobs locally when government chooses out of state firms. That is why we need to keep tax dollars in MI by contracting with Michigan businesses.
FAIR TRADE – By advocating for fair trade policies, we can expand the market for the products we make in Michigan
BANK LOCALLY – Local banks and credit unions know our community the best. Keeping our funds in community credit unions and community banks makes money available to help our local economy expand.
ACCOUNTABILITY – Tax breaks are given to companies to create jobs. Too often promises don’t materialize after the ribbon cutting ceremony. We need to hold companies accountable by monitoring the number of jobs they create.
We cannot forget about those who are still out of work. That is why I will:
- FIGHT TO EXTEND unemployment benefits for those reaching the end
- INCREASE retraining and job placement services
- SUPPORT food bank and medical support for the unemployed
