Reforming Government

I ran for County Commissioner in order to fight for change. I led the effort to reform county government, cut wasteful spending and refocus our efforts on creating jobs.
When it came time to reform, I led by example:
I voted to cut the pay for County Commissioners twice, a 10% reduction
  • I voted to cut County Commissioner health benefits
  • I voted to place the question of term limits on the ballot for the new County Executive and County Commissioners
  • I will not have a county pension
Taking a stand on these issues has not made me popular among other politicians, BUT IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.
I am running for State Senator to be your check on state government. I have no special interests to protect. MY JOB IS TO PROTECT YOU.
I will be an independent reformer in Lansing. I want a state that works to create jobs, provides educational opportunities for our local students, protects our senior citizens and continues to reform and reduce state government.

What Paul Gieleghem has done to reform Macomb County:

  • Successfully fought to get a new County Charter
  • Successfully reduced the number of County Commissioners from 26 to 13
  • Enabled voters to eliminate the politically appointed Road Commissioners, including their salaries and perks.
  • Cut County Commissioner pay twice, a total of 10%
  • Ended County Commissioner pensions
  • Enabled voters to make the Road Commission a professional department of County Government

What Paul Gieleghem will do to reform Michigan

  • Require public disclosure of personal income for all elected and appointed officials
  • Dock legislators’ pay when they fail to balance the budget on time
  • Cut the number of state legislators
  • Prevent legislators from becoming lobbyists for at least 10 years after leaving office
  • Make government transparent by showing all budgets and contracts online
  • End lifetime health benefits for state lawmakers
  • Cut legislative pay by 25 percent
